Preparation is Key!
Joshua 6:3–5 (ESV)
3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. 4 Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, every one straight before him.”
What has that to do with us today?
Preparation Before Jericho
These were commands given by God himself when he appeared in front of Joshua in the personage of the Commander of the Lord’s Army. Before Joshua took the city there were many items of preparations the Israelites had to accomplish.
What sorts of
preperations did Joshua have to perform?
There was the fact that at Gilgal all of the children had to be circumcised before the war could go on. Most of the people who were Israelites at the time of the crossing into Canaan and the capture of Jericho had been born in the wilderness and the standard procedure of doing a circumcision at the age of eight days. So imagine men from Joshua’s age down to the babies who had to be circumcised.
Spiritual Preparation Before Jericho
So now we look at the spiritual preparation before Jericho could even be taken. The feast of the Passover had to be observed in Canaan before the battle for Jericho could begin (Jos 5). The feast of the Passover was critical to educate the new generation of their past. To help them spiritually understand how the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt in a supernatural way.
Tactical Preparation Before Jericho
So your Joshua right. Your God’s chosen general. You can march up to Jericho and just take it right? I mean right? Wrong, Joshua knew better, Joshua dispatched spies into Jericho to ascertain the mood of his enemy, were they prepared, where did their weakness lie? God even had a way of escape set up for his intelligence officers who crept into Jericho by way of Rahab. Rahab would play a small but crucial role as the Savior of the world would have her DNA in his blood.
Marching Orders Before Jericho
Joshua has the intelligence reports from his spies, check. Thepeople have been circumcised and healed, check. Spiritual matters were handledas Passover was observed check. If I were Joshua I’d want to be on those Jerichosites like white on rice.
To God Be The Glory
However, God had a clear way that he wantedthis city to be taken. Joshua or his captains would not receive the glory butthe LORD GOD of Israel would declare to all of Canaan that it was due to himthat victory had been won and not any other reason.
What this has to do with me?
Lately, I have felt like we have just stepped out of the wilderness. The so-called warrior in me wants to rush to my Jericho’s and AI’s, etc. But I have to understand that we must prepare ourselves spiritually. Once we have prepared ourselves spiritually we must prepare ourselves by getting tactical and logistical information about the places we’ve been tasked with taking for the Kingdom. And lastly, we must wait on the LORD to issue us commands and how he wants to do them before we can expect his assistance or guarantee of success.
Have you done your Preparation Before Jericho
I’m excited to see where God is taking us. We have a
